TDOT litter.gif

Lakeland has an Adopt-A-Street Program to assist in cleaning up roadside litter.

Help us to put litter in its place to keep clean-up costs (and taxes) down!

To register: download an information packet. Please NOTE: All participants in the adopt-a-street program must first view the safety CD before performing any litter collections. Contact City Hall at 901-867-5409 for more information.

Let’s make this a city wide effort!

                            About the ADOPT-A-STREET Program

  • Volunteers will be asked to conduct cleanups alongside roadways at least four times a year, specifically once during each season.
  • After one cleanup by the volunteers, the city will install a sign with the volunteers name proudly displayed along that corridor.
  • All roadside litter will be disposed of by the City of Lakeland.
  • The City of Lakeland will provide all materials and safety gear necessary for the cleanup program. A staff member will be present during the cleanup.
  • Recommended roadway cleanup projects will be about 1/2 mile in length. Both sides of the roadway must be cleaned up.

Did You Know?

According to Tennessee's StopLitter.org, 48% of polled Tennesseans say they have knowingly thrown trash on the street and 1 in 5 do this on a regular basis.

18% of all littered items end up in our streams and waterways as pollution. That means litter in our state travels to other states and eventually ends up in the ocean.

The Tennessee Litter Law is designed to help reduce some of that trash. Smaller amounts of litter will be punished by a $50 fine, while larger fines are reserved for larger amounts.

Keep Lakeland Beautiful campaign.

KLB_logo.jpgBesides being an eyesore, litter hurts our economic development efforts – new businesses will hesitate to locate here if they believe that the litter problem could harm their reputation.

We can all do our part to help by (1) not littering, (2) picking up litter when you see it, and (3) finding ways to get involved in City-wide clean-up efforts such as the City's Adopt-a-Street program or Semi-Annual Clean-up Day.

Cleanup is very costly to taxpayers from cleaning them up on the side of the road to removing them from our water supply.

PUT LITTER IN ITS PLACE to keep Lakeland Beautiful to residents and attractive to relocating families and businesses!

DO-NOT-LITTER.jpgSpecial thanks to those who work to keep down litter in our city.

Big items, such as tires, can be disposed of during our Semi-Annual Clean-up Day.

Save the City (and taxpayers) money by not littering!

Tennessee Litter Hotline

You can help keep litter off the roadways by reporting violations to the State.
Here's a link. If the link isn't active, please call 877-8-Litter (877-854-8837).

From TN.gov:
Thank you for caring enough to help us keep our roadways free of litter! With your help, we can go a long way in keeping Tennessee clean and beautiful. The online litter hotline is available for concerned citizens like yourself to take action by letting us know when you witness littering from vehicles on the state’s roadways. You may also call toll-free 1-877-8-LITTER.

With the information you provide to us below, we will send a friendly reminder letter to the registered owner of the Tennessee vehicle informing them of the negative consequences of their littering actions and providing them with educational materials. The letter will include information about how to contain their litter and inform them that litterers can be fined up to $1,500.
