Lakeland School System Named Exemplary District for 2019
Distinction Recognizes Combination of Achievement and Growth
The Tennessee Department of Education has named Lakeland School System an Exemplary School District for the for the third time in four years of eligibility. Exemplary districts meet state-set requirements for student achievement, and student growth in total student population as well as individual sub-groups of students.
The District is also #1 in the state for grades 3-5 achievement; ranked 2nd for grades 6-8 achievement.
Lakeland Elementary Named a
National Blue Ribbon School, in 2018!
The US Department of Education announced, on 10/1/18, that Lakeland Elementary School has received the distinction of being named a National Blue Ribbon School!
In a press release, Superintendent Dr. Ted Horrell stated, “This award is essentially the highest honor a school can receive in the United States…”.
Once nominated, the school goes through a series of comprehensive evaluations to determine if they qualify for the award. Congratulations to LES for this prestigious honor! Full story.

LSS Named Exemplary District by the Tennessee Dept. of Education

In August 2015, the Tennessee Department of Education named Lakeland School System (LSS) an exemplary school district, one of 12 systems in the state to receive the distinction. In addition, LSS was named a Reward School, placing it in the top five percent of schools for academic achievement. LSS’s district-wide TCAP achievement scores ranked number one in the state in both math and reading/language arts, and ranked number two in the state in science. These honors came during the inaugural year of LSS operation.
In addition...Lakeland Elementary School, was named as a Reward School placing it in the top 5% of schools in the state for academic achievement.
Superintendent Dr. Ted Horrell said, “These honors are a direct reflection of the hard work and high academic standards of our teachers, staff members, administrators, and school board as well as the commitment of our students and parents to meet those high standards. I could not be more proud of our district.”

Lakeland Elementary Receives AdvancedED Accreditation (March 2017)
The external review is a diagnostic process to stimulate and guide continuous improvement with focus on Impact of teaching and learning, capacity of leadership and use of resources. The external review team observed the teachers in the classroom and spoke with stakeholders throughout the review process.
The report said LES has a strong leadership team and that they are teaching students how to be leaders. LES overall score was 323.08 compared to the AdvancedED average 278.94. The accreditation is valid for 5 years.

Matt Adler Named Principal of Lakeland Middle Preparatory School
LSS Superintendent Ted Horrell has selected Matt Adler as the founding principal of Lakeland Middle Preparatory School. A resident of Lakeland, Mr. Adler is currently vice-principal of Bolton High School where he previously served as the coordinator of the school's International Baccalaureate Program, a Master Teacher, and chairman of the science department in which he taught standard, honors, and AP Chemistry.
Mr. Adler received his bachelor's degree from the University of South Carolina and has master's degrees in both Curriculum & Instruction and Educational Leadership.
Mr. Adler will formally begin his work preparing for the 2017-18 school year on July 1st, but we look forward to opportunities in the near future to introduce Matt Adler to the Lakeland community. Go Lions!

The opening date for Lakeland Middle Preparatory School is now August 2017.
LMPS will have some neat features including a cafetorium (well-suited for community theater) and a library designed for community use (after hours as staffing permits).
Lakeland Middle Preparatory School Expected to Open August 2017!
In the fall of 2015, the Lakeland Board of Education approved contracts with Jones Gilliland Group, LLC
for the purchase of 94 acres of land, located just east and north of the intersection of Canada Road and Highway 70, for construction of a middle school (grades 5th - 8th) and future high school.
Lakeland, TN Middle School Financing Secured Through 20-Year Capital Outlay Note
LAKELAND, Tennessee (September 11, 2015) – On Thursday, September 10th, during the City of Lakeland’s Board of Commissioners meeting, it was announced that the $20,000,000 capital outlay notes
to finance the new Lakeland Middle Preparatory School* is expected to close on Wednesday, September 16th.
The PFM Group of Memphis handled the offering on September 9th which was finalized at a 2.82% interest rate. The winning bidder was KeyBanc Capital Markets.
Jim Atkinson, Lakeland City Manager
, said “We’ve been pleased with the entire offering process, thanks in part to Lakeland’s high rating with Moody’s Investment Services. The final interest rate actually came in a little under what we were expecting.”
The capital outlay notes will be paid back primarily with the $.55 property tax increase that was approved by the Board of Commissioners this summer.
The funds from the capital outlay notes will be used to build the new Lakeland Middle Preparatory School on the 94-acre Jones-Gilliland property located just east and north of the intersection of Canada Road and Highway 70. The parcel is under contract and is expected to close soon, after the final inspections are complete.
Lakeland Middle Preparatory School is expected to be open in August 2017. A high school could be built on the property at some point in the future.
