Interim City Manager
Jim Atkinson serves as Interim City Manager and Director of Planning and Administration.
He will begin to serve as Lakeland's City Manager in March 2015.
He has been with the City of Lakeland since 2005.
Jim works with businesses and developers to help Lakeland become a destination city for both businesses and families.
He will continue working towards that goal which includes efficiently providing services for Lakeland residents as well as preparing for the future demands brought on by economic development.
The Lakeland City Manager is appointed by the elected Board of Commissioners, which includes the elected Mayor and four commissioners. The board establishes goals and policies by ordinance or resolution and appoints a professional City Manager to administer the daily affairs of the city.
The City Manager is responsible to the Board of Commissioners for the administration of board policy and for daily city operations. The City Manager acts similar to a chief executive officer appointed by the board of a corporation and appoints and supervises all other city personnel.
The City of Lakeland is governed by a “Commission-Manager” charter established by the State of Tennessee.
