Open Burns
For open burning in Shelby County, the applicant must contact, and obtain a permit from, the Pollution Control Section at 901-544-7349. Also see Shelby County's Open Burn web page and letter to prospective burners (PDF).

While cooking and ceremonial fires are permitted, no “agricultural burning” (i.e., leaf burning) is allowed, with some exceptions (PDF). Controlled burning is allowed by permit only from Shelby County Fire Department and the Shelby County Health Department. This type of burning is the pit-type burning by developers.

For burn permits, individuals should also contact the Battalion Chief at Shelby County Fire Department at 379-7072 and Shelby County Health Department at 544-7303.

Firearm Discharge Prohibited

Lakeland ordinances prohibit the discharge of weapons (including firearms, bows or by other means) in the City limits except for the following areas:

  • Law Enforcement Officers in their official functions
  • In an established and lawfully operating firing range or related business establishment or educational establishment, under lawful supervision

  • On property which meets both of the following conditions:

    - Zoned "AG" (Agricultural) under the Lakeland Zoning Ordinance; and

    - A parcel of property at least 20 areas in size. See map of Lakeland property meeting criteria (PDF, 3 MB).

Calls on the illegal discharge of weapons may be directed to the Shelby County Sheriff, 379-7625.

Actual hunting is regulated by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA), which may establish more stringent regulations for hunting (such as limiting hunting within a certain distance of a house or business or road). For general hunting questions, call TWRA at 1-800-372-3928. For illegal hunting reports, call 1-800-831-1173. See the TWRA web site for additional information.
