1. What are storm sewers?

Storm sewers are usually associated with underground pipes which convey surface water to ponds, lakes, or streams.

2. Why are storm sewers regulated?

In 1993, the United States Environmental Protection Agency started regulating storm sewer discharges from cities with less than 100,000 in population. The purpose of the regulations was to reduce nonpoint source pollution entering our streams, rivers, lakes, and ponds.

3. Why are we being charged on our Memphis Light, Gas, and Water bill for storm sewers?

The charges are to pay for ongoing services that Lakeland has to provide to the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation. These services include storm sewer inspections, annual reports, and developing new regulations concerning stormwater runoff. Monies also contribute to storm sewer improvements.

4. Why should residents be concerned about stormwater pollution?

Residents contribute to stormwater pollution through many processes, such as allowing pet feces to accumulate in their yard, over fertilizing their yard, discharging oil from or leaking oil pans from their vehicle, and introducing litter to the storm sewer system. These pollutants interfere with life functions of fish, insects, and other animals.
