Lakeland is
located northeast of the
metropolitan area of Memphis. A
newly designated Tree City USA, it
is home to several subdivisions
of $300,000-plus homes. In
addition, it has easy access to
four major travel routes,
Interstate 40 and Highways 64, 70 and 385.
It's also located within minutes
of two malls, the
Wolfchase Galleria mall and the
Lakeland Outlet mall.
Taxes
Lakeland was created
as both a tax-free and
service-free community. In other
words, no city property taxes
was equated with no services.
That situation was expected to
last 5–10 years but has now
lasted for more than 25 years. The State of
Tennessee is expected to soon
formulate a tax policy that will
keep the State financially
viable. The decisions made in
Nashville will profoundly impact
Lakeland in years to come. This
underscores the need for
Lakeland to plan for a range of
possible ways to deal with its
own financial health,
particularly because decisions
at the state level will directly
affect how Lakeland finances its
services.
While
Lakeland does not have a city
tax, it does impose a business tax on wholesale and retail businesses, including home businesses. There is an annual fee of $20.00 plus a gross receipts tax, ranging from 1/40th to 1/8th of one percent, depending on the type of business. Contact the City Recorder for details.
